Get ready for some highway hijinks, as we teamed up with our friends at Patti People, a collective of female creatives, who just came off of a Southwest road trip filming for their new project This Way. Western film, meets surf/skate vid, This Way reads more like a Tarantino film than your typical skate flick. The trip was motored by a 1994 stretch limo, as Stance Punk & Poet Nora Vasconcellos, Laura Enever, Jaleesa Vincent, Frankie Harrer, and Shanae Collins traversed across the desert and eventually made their way to CA, cruising, skating, surfing and causing some mischief along the way. Can you tell us a little bit about Patti People?
Scott Wynn and I started Patti, but we'd like to think of it as more of a collective. A group of like-minded people making fun stuff together. We wanted to give a voice to people that lived unconventionally. We didn't see any other media companies creating cool original content with a focus on female counterculture, so we started Patti. The name is inspired by punk musician 'Patti Smith,' and the first female national skateboard champion 'Patti McGee.'
What's the inspiration behind the 'This Way' series?
We wanted to bridge the gap between female skateboarding and surfing, so we thought what better to do that then to get Nora Vasconcellos, Laura Enever and Jaleesa Vincent in a 94 stretch limo for 9 days down the East Coast to see what happened…and the result from that was a bond as strong as nails. We were planning the next trip before the first one was even over. It made perfect sense to theme it western and head from Texas to Nora's house in California. We brought Shanae Collins and Frankie Harrer along for the ride as well.
What was the craziest moment that happened during this last trip?
We were driving on a freeway between Santa Fe and Holbrook. It was late, cold and we were cruising a little faster then the limo liked. The steering felt weird then the front wheel popped, we were swerving the 30ft limo to safety. Luckily we all made it but a little shaken. Nothing that staying in a teepee and warming our dinners on the heater won't fix.
